Nova East, Atlantic Canada's longest running Star Party
August 14 - August 16, 2015

2015 Guest Speaker: Alan Dyer

Organized by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Halifax Centre
and the Minas Astronomy Group

Location: Smileys Provincial Park, Hants County, Nova Scotia

Welcome to the home page of Nova East 2015, the 29th anniversary of Atlantic Canada's regional star party. Nova East was originally established as the camping and observing weekend for the Halifax Centre, and has grown to include participants from many other astronomy clubs in the Atlantic region, and a number of attendees from the northeastern United States as well. All participants come to enjoy dark skies. A limiting magnitude of +6 is the norm. Nova East occurs on the weekend of the new moon phase near the end of the summer.

Alan Dyer, the keynote speaker and special guest at Nova East 2015, is one of Canada's best-known astronomy authors and astrophotographers. He is associate editor of SkyNews magazine, and a contributing editor to Sky and Telescope. He has co-authored several best selling guidebooks for amateur astronomers, including The Backyard Astronomer's Guide, and most recently the ebook How to Photograph and Process Nightscapes and Time-Lapses, available through the Apple iBookstore. He recently retired from 40 years of producing programs for planetariums, most recently for the Digital Dome at the TELUS Spark science centre in Calgary. As an amateur astronomer Alan takes the opportunity as often as possible to visit southern latitudes in pursuit of fabulous southern skies. His other obsession, eclipse chasing, has taken him to every continent, chalking up 15 total solar eclipses. Asteroid 78434 is named for him. You can find him on the web at where there are links to his social media sites and blog.
