Nova East, Atlantic Canada's longest-running Star Party

Welcome to the home page of Nova East 2017, the 30th
anniversary of Atlantic Canada's regional star party. Nova
East was originally established as the camping and observing
weekend for the Halifax Centre, and has grown to include
participants from many other astronomy clubs in the Atlantic
region, and a number of attendees from the northeastern United
States. All participants come to enjoy dark skies. A limiting
magnitude of +6 is the norm. Nova East occurs on a weekend near the new Moon phase towards the end of summer.

Pat Kelly, is the keynote speaker and special guest at Nova East 2017 and the title of his
talk will be: The Natural Satellites of Jupiter.

Pat Kelly, born and raised in Nova Scotia, is a very well-known and highly valued member of the RASC Halifax Centre since 1981. He has served on the centre Council almost every year since then, in various capacities-you name it, he has done it. He is also an effective astronomy instructor and planetarium presenter. On the national level, he has contributed significantly to RASC publications in editorial roles, particularly as Editor of the RASC Observer's Handbook (2007-2011 editions).
Today, he represents RASC Halifax Centre on the National Council, and is Co-Chair of that Council. He continues to contribute to the RASC Observer's Handbook in several sections, including Phenomena of Jupiter's Satellites.
Living in Falmouth, he is a keen birder and is actively involved in the Blomidon Naturalists Society.
Features of the 2017 Nova East
Saturday evening BBQ: All welcome. We will cook up a delicious BBQ and just ask for
registrants to bring a side dish, salad or dessert. If there are dietary restrictions, registrants are asked to bring their own food. Please indicate on your registration form if you plan to attend and what
you might bring ( or contact ).
Door prizes: Each registrant will receive a door prize ticket. There will be some “right some
good” prizes to be won!
Astrophotography contest: We will host an astrophotography contest for NE registrants.
All entrants must be registered for Nova East, but you don't have to be present to win. Please send one submission per registrant in PDF format to .
We will confirm receipt of submission.
All submissions of astronomical subject matter will be considered (including atmospheric events). Photos will be judged based on the following criteria: astronomical interest, originality, artistic value, and technical merit. First prize will be a framed print of the winning submission.
The contest closes on Friday, June 30, 2017 at noon.
Public observing: Both Friday and Saturday evenings from dusk until 12 midnight. No laser pointers
after 12 midnight please.
